Britney Spears – Bipolar, Schizophrenic…Both?

Britney Spears shocked everyone last weekend when she tested negative for drugs and alcohol following her emotional breakdown on Thursday night.

Everyone has their opinion as to why Hollywood's favorite pop tart is spiraling out of control but it recently became obvious that Brit-Brit is suffering from a severe psychological disorder.

Medical experts believe that the former pop icon could be suffering from either bipolar disorder or schizophrenia.

Bipolar Disorder

Bipolar disorder is characterized as "alternating episodes of depression and mania (excitement)."

If Spears is bipolar, like many media reports are claiming, it would explain a lot of her erratic behavior. Sometimes Britney acts like the photogs are her best friends and then, minutes later, she'll be giving them the finger and cursing at them out loud.

But, while Brit does display characteristics similar to those found in bipolar patients, some experts believe that Britney is showing signs of a different, more severe, mental disease: Schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is defined as "a common type of psychosis characterized by hallucinations and/or delusions, personality changes, withdrawal, and serious thought and speech disturbances."

Britney also shows signs of schizophrenia. If she was diagnosed with this disorder, it would also explain a lot of her actions.

Doctors from Cedars-Sinai hospital (the hospital Britney stayed at this past weekend) told ET Online that the pop tart kept speaking in a British accent.

It was obvious by the look on her face when she was being transferred from her home to the ambulance (and the ambulance to the hospital) that Brit was delusional.

It's clear that Britney suffers from a mental disorder, but which one?

Do you think Britney suffers from bipolar disorder...schizophrenia...or both?

I'm acutlaly relieved that Britney has a mental disorder - as mean as that may sound. But its better than thinking she was acting this way because she was on drugs or drunk like some of hte other hollywood stars. I think she can get help for her mental disease and she'll be back to normal in a while.

Completely agree with that.

I don't think anybody reporting news and/or reading/watching the news has any clue as to what she's going through. Not once have I heard any "reports" about a MOTHER that has lost her children. Does anyone even remember what a looser K-Fed is? Does anyone know that she filed for a divorce just days before she had to give him millions of dollars according to the pre-nup? Does anyone remember that she was in love with a guy that stood her up, used her for money, used her for fame and she JUST LIKE ANYONE ELSE....could be heartbroken? Has anyone else ever lost their cool when a relationship went way south? Then after treating her like crap she has to hand her children over to him??? Can anyone that has children imagine how painful that would be? Why does everyone love to hate her? She's just a young women for Pete's sake...Every person she encounters wants a piece of her. She needs to find love...someone that cares about her....Think of Drew Barrymore...she figured it out.... Aside from getting her head shaved...what has she done that is soooo terrible? Stop calling her a slut too....She is far from one!!! So she doesn't have the best taste in clothes all of the time. Let's pray that all this negative press doesn't kill Britney!!!

I agree with you - No one is reporting this as a stress response to insane life and insane options. I can't imagine the pain in the ass her ex-husband must be. But then again - people don't really seem to want their sex stars to have the complications of real life - you know kids - putting on weight - having emotional needs - having soul needs. Let us all pray that the wave passes over Britney - that those who find sport in watching the downfall of those they envy will find something or someone else to pester and leave Britney alone to heal.

Both of these conditions can be treated. Ask Brian Wilson. Perhaps Britney will be a poster-person for this all too common illness. Now just may be a great time to simply focus on these illnesses rather than the victim. One in 70 young women suffer from the precurser (anxiety/depression). This means if your neighbor seems to be taking Contact C or just maybe enjoys sleeping in, just a bit too often....... or other self medication programs..... well, there you have it!!!

Schizophrinia and BiPolar are considered to be two of the worst illnesses one can have. She needs a lot of help either way. Britney is very ill and she could very well die.

As a person with such an illness .... seems to me that Britney is Bipolar!

It says above she is schizophrinic because “she was speaking in an British accent” at the hospital…..specking with a British accent is just grandiosity, many bipolar people do this type of thing when they are trying to show they are OK, especially when they are worried, scared and stressed. They want to be believed, so they act cool …. thinking by acting cool everything is OK now.

Bipolar is not just up and down….it is an emotional illness that should be called ManyPolar. The person abuses drugs, stays up all night partying, gains weight, looses weight, gets very angry, able to accomplish great things, high intellect, becomes a recluse, performs great art, becomes very sweet, experiences great shame and guilt. And above all when stable and better they are actually very good contributing people.

Many bipolar people are usually gifted in some way…example...Curt Corbin, Axel Rose, Lincoln…..look it up. Whereas, most schizophrenia sufferers have a vrey hard life and have difficultly fucntioning normally throughout their life, They do not usually perform on stage like Britney has.

Matter fact, Bipolar people quite often become very functional at various times in their life,...however, most people with Bipolar, that are sick as Britney, show psychotic symptoms also in their life time. This psychotic behavor could be considered schizophrenia, but it is not.

People with schizophrenia seem to me to be shy and concerned. Often frail. They have hallucinations, like a dragon chasing them ……. They can describe that dragon perfectly. And can sense the hallucination is coming by a taste or smell. There are many types of schizophrenia but not any that I know of include all her simptoms.

Bipolar’s have delusional situations, like if their child is taking away for a short while ….. they will not be able to stand the pain so they may try or kill themselves. This is very serious …. Almost half of Bipolar suffers try to kill themselves. So, their chances of dying from this illness is very high, especially in conjunction with mind altering substances and emotional situations including drugs and child custody.

Bipolar people get taken to jail because they were driving fast and crazy and the cop thinks they are drunk, when they are not. Many Bipolar people wear tags for this very reason, so hopefully they will end up in the hospital where they can be helped .... not jail. People with these two kinds of illnesses do very badly in jail, and can die.

Bipolar suffers with addiction tend to have a good life … then lose it all, and most die.

From what I know about this, I think she is Bipolar. It is genetic so there probably is someone in her family that is at least UniPolar. She could be borderline; it has many of the same characteristic, but is not considered a physical brain illness like Bipolar. They are basically treated the same though.

One difference maybe that Borderline folks tend to threaten suicide more often and it may be for attention, whereas bipolar folk’s suicide thoughts seem to be tied to their emotions. Boarderline is considered currable, BiPolar is not.

Main thing is she needs her space and let people help her…..no matter what…she has she needs help. The best people to help her right now are people that truly love her, people in recovery that can mentor her and she needs to be in a hospital for at least 90 days. No publicity. She needs doctors that see people like her everyday…...they have seen thousands. These are clinic doctors that have seen the real thing. Not Dr. Phil……

Last God is the only one that can save her…..and he will …. So let her find him now.

The English accent is very telling. I had an ex girlfriend who began to display the exact same behaviour. My ex would speak in accents, fly into rages and crying fits and at times was in an odd manic phase. I reached the end of my rope and went to court and had her commited. I was told she suffered from Bi Polar, Borderline Personality Disorder and Psychotic episodes. My ex was put on Zyprexa. The drug caused any many problems as it solved. I just hope someone in her family cares enough about her to force her into treatment if need be.

wow...personally i really do think that people should be nice to her and help her and not critisize her...i can seriously feel this girls pain jus look ing at her pictures and see her on tv...i have a metal illness called borderline personality disorder n i think maybe she has the same thing cuz both bipolar and scizophrina r pretty much wut borderline personality is...most people dont even know about this illness... heres a little info i got about it...

Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a serious mental illness characterized by pervasive instability in moods, interpersonal relationships, self-image, and behavior. This instability often disrupts family and work life, long-term planning, and the individual's sense of self-identity. Originally thought to be at the "borderline" of psychosis, people with BPD suffer from a disorder of emotion regulation. While less well known than schizophrenia or bipolar disorder (manic-depressive illness), BPD is more common, affecting 2 percent of adults, mostly young women.1 There is a high rate of self-injury without suicide intent, as well as a significant rate of suicide attempts and completed suicide in severe cases.2,3 Patients often need extensive mental health services, and account for 20 percent of psychiatric hospitalizations.4 Yet, with help, many improve over time and are eventually able to lead productive lives.

Symptoms

While a person with depression or bipolar disorder typically endures the same mood for weeks, a person with BPD may experience intense bouts of anger, depression, and anxiety that may last only hours, or at most a day.5 These may be associated with episodes of impulsive aggression, self-injury, and drug or alcohol abuse. Distortions in cognition and sense of self can lead to frequent changes in long-term goals, career plans, jobs, friendships, gender identity, and values. Sometimes people with BPD view themselves as fundamentally bad, or unworthy. They may feel unfairly misunderstood or mistreated, bored, empty, and have little idea who they are. Such symptoms are most acute when people with BPD feel isolated and lacking in social support, and may result in frantic efforts to avoid being alone.

People with BPD often have highly unstable patterns of social relationships. While they can develop intense but stormy attachments, their attitudes towards family, friends, and loved ones may suddenly shift from idealization (great admiration and love) to devaluation (intense anger and dislike). Thus, they may form an immediate attachment and idealize the other person, but when a slight separation or conflict occurs, they switch unexpectedly to the other extreme and angrily accuse the other person of not caring for them at all. Even with family members, individuals with BPD are highly sensitive to rejection, reacting with anger and distress to such mild separations as a vacation, a business trip, or a sudden change in plans. These fears of abandonment seem to be related to difficulties feeling emotionally connected to important persons when they are physically absent, leaving the individual with BPD feeling lost and perhaps worthless. Suicide threats and attempts may occur along with anger at perceived abandonment and disappointments.

People with BPD exhibit other impulsive behaviors, such as excessive spending, binge eating and risky sex. BPD often occurs together with other psychiatric problems, particularly bipolar disorder, depression, anxiety disorders, substance abuse, and other personality disorders.

anyways...this personality disorder is very very hard to live with....i have the same problems as britney dose...i lost custody of my daughter n it is so painful to deal with all the people calling you a bad mother,,ive been there and it hurts really bad,,it makes me feel like is life really worth liveing if ur such a bad person...ive wanted to kill myself lots of times jus cuz im bein called a bad mom....so people need to take a second to think,, how close is she to kiliing herself??? u never know...the media is driveing her to this....be nice...

LOL @ the "descriptions" of Scizo vs. BiPolar by the anon with the tldr; comment. Brit is schizo. If the reports coming in about her ranting about Kevin working for the FBI are true, then she's got paranoid schizophrenia, and schizophrenics are NOT shy and reserved (I don't care what you say, anon). I dealt with it first hand and they can be as loud and crazy as the next bipolar. Britney is also at the prime age at when it can strike people hard (mid to late 20's). A while ago I watched a PBS program about a young woman who was fine one day and then started to show weird signs all of a sudden and then just went form being a functional young woman in her prime to a raving schizo. It was sad. :(

I am a psychologist who has 25 years of experience as a clinical psychologist. Without having actually evaluated her, I can only make an educated guess that she might have a bipolar disorder, or a borderline personality disorder. It's highly doubtful that she has schizophrenia. Because these individuals experience delusions and hallucinations, it is very difficult for them to function at all. It's very sad to see this young woman struggle like this. However, she is obviously extremely defiant and she may never get better unless she is willing to accept the help she needs.

she is neither, she is nor.
